Field Biology

Prince William Sound, Alaska
Seasonal Field Biologist

Ivan was hired as a field biologist for a survey of megafauna along the north coast of Montague Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska in the spring of 2010. The survey focused specifically on Black Turnstones (Arenaria melanocephala) and Surfbirds (Aphriza virgata).

Seabird and Marine Mammal Survey Team

The USCGC Healy is the largest and one of the most scientifically active icebreakers belonging to the United States. Ivan volunteered to be a part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife contingent on board the Healy for a spring research "cruise" of the Bering Sea in 2009. Though he originally only volunteered to take part in the Seabird and Marine Mammal Survey, the Healy made frequent stops for on-station science work that required the seabird and marine mammal survey to suspend data gathering for long periods of time, so in addition to working with the megafauna team Ivan volunteered to assist an on-ice science team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the stopping periods.

Ivan volunteered as a member of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife seabird and marine mammal survey team in the summers of 2005, 2006, and 2007.  The project focused on the Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris).
